Cindy Adams of New York Post Makes it Official

John and Brad take venerable New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams to Aqueduct!

I saw the stalls, paddock, winner’s circle, jockey’s weigh-in room (they have behinds smaller than mine), outriders who lead the horses to the gate, and grooms who walk them before the race. I learned racing developed our terminology. Jockeying for position, ahead by a nose, coming around the bend, in the home stretch, that’s his turf and, mounting from a trainer’s bended knee, give them a leg up. And, despite my fear at doing something wrong, two judges high in a skybox let me press the button that made the fifth race “official.”

Official Derby Magazine Features Film

The Official Derby Magazine contains an excellent feature on the film and John and Brad by Rena Baer.

“The main thing we wanted to do was get interesting characters, not necessarily find the Derby Winner,” John Hennegan said. “We also wanted to smash the Hollywood racing stereotype of old men, rich people and the glue factory.”

Seattle Post Intelligencer: Thrilling

William Arnold, the Seattle Post Intelligencer’s movie critic reviews the film.

It’s full of privileged, behind-the-scenes moments, and it communicates the genuine love all these people have for the sport and its traditions. (No one here seems to be motivated by money.)

Continued Blog Support of the Film

Blacktype Blog:

I thought the Hennegan brothers did exactly what they set out to do; make a movie about the people behind the horses. I loved their coverage of Lawyer Ron’s 61 year old groom. You don’t rub horses into your 60’s for the money, you do it because you love the animals. In fact, that was a running theme among all the players in the movie, which I thought was brought out very well.
